Character Creation Guide
The character creation process at Midnight City can be as in depth or as simple as you want to make it. We don't have an approval process for you to jump through, and in fact you don't even have to know your character's backstory to start playing them. This guide will give an overview of a few different types of characters you can make, what lore you need to read to do so, and will hopefully clear up any confusion you may have with the process.
Must-Read Lore
These pages will be relevant to ANY type of character you want to play, so consider this the bare minimum of reading.
Character Roles
If you want to make...
...a weapon-based damage-dealing character, check out the Gunslinger (ranged) or Gladiator (melee) classes.
...a defense-focused character who can absorb damage and fight back, check out the Defender.
...a stealth-focused character, check out the Operative (combat) or the Virtuoso (support/utility).
...a magic-based damage-dealing character, check out the Mage or the Ecomancer.
...a magic-based support character, check out the Lifebinder (healing/buffs/debuffs).
...a technology-based support/utility character, check out the Technician.
...an unarmed damage/support character, check out the Cybermonk.
Character Origins
If you want to make...
...a character who just arrived through a Nexus Gate from another world, read the Must-Reads above. Pre-existing OCs will need some adapting to the lore and systems of Midnight City, but that's where the Nexus Gates come in. The energy of this world changed them when they arrived, explaining any mismatches in abilities/powers between their past selves and now. They can retain any memories you want them to from their previous exploits in other RPs, just their abilities/gear/skills/etc. must be altered to conform to Midcity's systems.
...a Midnight City native, you can add Groups (especially Azure Union and Paladins) and the Glossary to the list above, and at least familiarize yourself with Gordian-Allod and Halcyon Group from the Corporations page.
...a character from another country in this world, add Nations to the reading list. The Timeline may also be relevant, specifically the 'Corporate Era' section.
Character Jobs
All characters should be in a position where they're willing to be hired on for mercenary work/odd jobs, or are the sort to get involved if they see something 'going down', if you intend for them to participate in quests. Otherwise, it can be very difficult for them to get involved.
Characters can certainly work normal jobs as well, and can earn money for it as seen in the Downtime rules. However, characters can't be Megacorp employees, soldiers/cops, or members of the elite/ultrawealthy classes. They should be spending a lot of time in the Zone. You can absolutely have corporate/military/wealthy ties in their backstory but it should be in the past and something they've been cut off from.
Essentially, active characters need to be on the bottom rungs of society, willing to get their hands dirty, and willing to be in opposition to the powers that be in order to engage in the types of campaigns and story arcs that will occur.
