Money makes the world go 'round.
As the world rebuilt itself following N-Day, power concentrated in the hands of those who took advantage of the situation fastest. These people weren't bound to the laws or regulations of the collapsed former nations of the world, nor were they bound by the growing new states rising out of the rubble. These groups of powerful individuals were the genesis of the new megacorporations; who bought, stole, and hoarded the technological advances brought about by the harnessing of nexus energy and used them to extract wealth and loyalty from the common people.
Now, though new nation-states claim sovereignty and independence, everyone knows the true masters of the world are the corps. They control private armies, conduct espionage and raids, order assassinations, and operate with impunity to serve their own ends. Yet they also control the media, brainwash the populace with bread and circuses, and offer the average citizen their only real shot at a stable life. Sign your life away as a corpo employee, get company housing, company transit, see the company doctor. All it costs you is your freedom - and, if you try to leave, maybe even your life.
