Fae

The Fae are known around the world for their innate skill with magic. As a result of this skill, their persuasiveness, and the consolidation of their population into a unified political force, Fae rose to many positions of power during the rebuilding efforts after N-Day.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

There are many different ethnic groups within the fae species, including but not limited to the brùnaidh, selkie, ban síde, and aos sí. Each group possesses subtle differences in skin tone, facial features, hair, and so forth, but all share a few common traits:

  • Ageless appearance
  • Extremely long lifespan, upwards of 500 years
  • Slightly pointed ears
  • Blue, green, or violet eyes
  • Tall and slender build

Fae are generally not known for being physically powerful, however, their magical power is unmatched. Fae possess an innate resistance to the mutagenic qualities of concentrated Nexite and the Nexus Rifts and are able to channel powerful magic for longer periods of time than other races before suffering any ill effects. They are not, however, able to handle hard liquor very well.

Fae are able to reproduce with humans, and half-fae are not uncommon. Half-fae display a mixture of human and Fae traits, in particular possessing a shorter lifespan than a full blooded Fae but a longer lifespan than a human.

CULTURE

Fae speak a language known to others as Faetongue. Broadly across Fae culture, names are thought to hold great power. For this reason, most Fae will offer a nickname or alias to strangers and withhold their true name. They can take offense to being asked their name, depending on how closely they adhere to their traditional culture; as more of them mingle with other species in the cities, they may adopt the cultural mores of humanity instead.

There are two distinct political and cultural groups of Fae, the Seelie Court and the Unseelie Court. The vast majority of Fae fall under the authority of one or the other if they reside in Fae-controlled lands or participate in Fae culture, but unaligned ‘Solitary Fae’ are not uncommon.

The Seelie Court rules over the isles of New Tairngire from their capital of Ardalham. They assisted in rebuilding much of western Europe and as a result are the strongest and most influential political force in the region. They work cooperatively - if sometimes reluctantly - with many other nations, though they are sticklers for protocol and being shown proper respect. They tend to have something of a trickster sense of humour and somehow always manage to have people owing them favours.

The Unseelie Court were ousted from New Tairngire after a political conflict with the Seelie Court, and moved across the Atlantic to find their fortunes in North America. Members of the Court went on to found Gordian-Allod International and play an integral role in the rebuilding and rise of Midnight City. Fae of the Unseelie Court are usually characterised as cruel, self-interested, and cunning. There is no such thing as ‘the goodness of their heart’ - it’s all about what’s in it for them, and they have no bones about cutting down others to get what they want.

Fae are generally viewed by others with a mixture of intrigue and suspicion, though many - especially in Midnight City - hold immense disdain for them due to their wealth and power. The Unseelie Court in particular is viewed by many as an enemy of the people, but one whose power makes them unassailable.
