Magic is energy that exists across all dimensions. It allows living beings to tap into powerful forces and shape reality, to perform feats that defy the laws of human science, but it is also a potent power source that has replaced fossil fuels and most other forms of power generation in major cities around the world. Earth’s dimension had very low levels of magic until M-Day, when magic energy flooded in from other dimensions and changed the landscape of the world forever.
CORIUM, CORITE, AND MAGIC TYPES
Nexus energy flows around the earth in the form of a substance called Corium. Scientists hypothesize that the combination of radioactive material from the nuclear blasts of M-Day and with the rush of Nexus energy through dimensional tears fused to create this unique substance found only on Earth.
Corium exists naturally in a liquid state that is often found in underground streams and deposits, but can also break through the earth and form fountains and other natural phenomena. Liquid corium is less dense than water, ice cold to the touch, and emits a blue-green glow. It is highly mutagenic, and in humans even seconds of direct exposure can cause a debilitating condition known as Corium poisoning. Liquid Corium is its most volatile and energetic form, and is used as fuel in the vast Corium reactors that power the world.
Under certain pressure and temperature conditions, liquid Corium will solidify into a crystal-like state. Solid Corium is much less volatile than liquid Corium. It emits the same glow and is cold to the touch. In both states Corium emits waves of Nexus energy that can be measured and used to classify the types of spells contained within the Corium.
Lightwave refers to all spells used to heal, protect, or enhance. Curative spells, mystic shields, and boosts of speed all fall under the lightwave designation.
Darkwave refers to all spells used to corrupt, curse, and manipulate the dead. A spell that saps life energy, causes sickness and weakness, or a Necromancer's raising and controlling of the dead would all fall under this designation.
Greywave refers to the large spectrum of spells in between, spells that could be used positively or negatively. For example, a fire spell could be used to burn someone, but it could also be used to start a campfire, and therefore is not inherently light or dark.
Greenwave refers to all spells linking the caster to nature, control of the weather, plant life, and animals.
When Corium is refined, it is called Corite. Corite can be safely handled without concern of radiation or mutagenic effects. It is a small, round, polished stone. Corite contains spells and is what people purchase when they wish to learn magic. Depending on which spell is contained in the stone, the Corite may have a different hue, but all are translucent and almost glass-like in appearance. Corite is also slotted into weapons, armour, and technology to enhance its function.
Magic can be harnessed and controlled by anyone as long as they have the spiritual fortitude to control it. There is no one way to cast magic. Everyone has a method that works for them, that allows their minds to focus and bend the magic energy to their will. Some people use focus items to channel the energy, such as staves and wands. Some people use prayers and incantations, believing that their gods and spirits grant them the power to cast magic. Others use specific hand gestures or other body movements.
Each piece of Corite contains a particular spell in it. The caster's magical aptitude determines the strength of the spell they are able to cast. As they grow in power, they can access more powerful versions of the spells contained within the Corite.
Stronger spells require more energy to be channeled, which is dangerous for inexperienced casters. Attempting feats beyond a caster’s willpower can lead to injury and even death in increasingly gruesome ways. Extended use of powerful magic without ample opportunity to rest and recuperate can lead to severe mental and physical fatigue, nose bleeds, blackouts, and so on. Mana is the measurement of a person’s spiritual energy, which is depleted each time they cast magic. Mana can be recovered with rest, as well as certain potions. It can also be drained from other people.
MAGIC AND MEDICINE
Curative or healing magic is excellent at healing trauma. When it comes to open wounds, broken bones, bruises or burns, magic is a quick and immensely effective treatment. Magic sees significant use in surgeries, especially transplants and new limb attachments. Transplant rejection and other surgical complications are nearly nonexistent thanks to magic.
Likewise, conditions caused by magic - such as a curse or hex - can obviously be undone by magic as well.
However, where magic fails is in the treatment of disease or systemic illness. Magic cannot cure cancer, fix asthma, or eliminate AIDS. For conditions such as these, conventional drug, stem cell, gene therapy, and other medical treatments are required. Therefore, at a modern Midcity hospital or clinic, you will see healthcare professionals employing a mix of magical and scientific treatments in order to heal their patients.
MAGIC AND TECHNOLOGY
Magic and technology are not opposed forces. Rather, they are often used in conjunction with each other. Corium can be harvested, processed, and used as a fuel source to generate electricity or to power engines and weapons. It was the discovery of Corium as an energy source that enabled civilization to rapidly rebuild and advance far beyond pre-war tech levels.
Magic can also be weaponized. Those that are unable to channel magic directly can purchase firearms or launchers that have been imbued with magic via slotted Corite or loaded with enchanted ammunition.
For all its uses, magic is still poorly understood. Researchers have devoted their entire lives to its study from both scientific and spiritual angles and it still remains an enigmatic and surprising force.
