  • Physical Description

    It was a good run. 15 years with the Vancity Defense Forces, a few years at Major, ensuring that logistics and operations were taken care of for his battalion commander. Mostly occupied with border defense, patrols, and the occasional interior operation, much of his time was spent on the highlands and shores surrounding the city, if not at the battalion headquarters in the city itself. A bad run-in with a truck left him battered and broken, the cost of cybernetic repair above the VDF's personnel recovery threshold. After standard medical treatment, Michael took out a series of personal loans to get his body back into a reasonable condition, less parts of both legs, a few additional reinforcing plates, and a section of replaced liver and intestine) and plus a decent bit of hardware. The payments aren't exactly easy, but he gets by with a private security position at Kreutzer Security, serving as an occasional sharpshooter and mostly-administrator for their operations teams. His remaining joints still hurt every so often, but, as he says, "nothing an active lifestyle can't fix. Sort of." He lives in a small two-bedroom apartment south of the Financial District, near the towering factories, cooling towers, and webs of industrial piping that marks the edge of the industrial zones. The other room still has a pair of twin beds in it, less used now than they used to be--the two daughters that used them have moved out over the past few years. The older of the two has embraced corporate life, joining the swarms of people who descend on the FD daily, setting up shop in one of the glass towers that define the area. The other... well, good question, really. Some sort of artist, at the moment? It was a singer a year ago, and a... carpenter, or something, before that (scrimshawer, if you asked her). She seems to be doing well, though, only asks for money once a month or so. As for Michael himself? If he's not on duty (and therefore wearing his corporate-issued uniform), he's generally found in some variation of a gray t-shirt and jeans, clomping around in a well-worn-but-still-shiny pair of combat boots. A little memento from his service days, now. He still carries his service rifle on occasion, though. It's technically a replacement (had to return the original to the armory), but it's a piece of familiarity from a good decade-and-a-half of his life. Bit of a dry sense of humor, bit quiet, Michael's generally at home with a book and a beer, maybe at one of the more local sorts of bars, or underneath an opportune tree.

    At six foot and 180 lbs, Jace isn't the smallest guy on the block but he often isn't the largest, either. He's just an average human but he has his mother's dirty blonde hair and baby blue eyes paired his father's build and bone structure. Blessed with good genes, he probably could've been a model but he's dead set on wracking up battle scars instead (of which he now has plenty) with a career choice that keeps him up all night using thugs as target practice.     Born in the Eastern Sprawl to a seamstress and a career degenerate, Jace bounced out a momma’s boy but it didn’t help that by the time he came around, Arthur Deckard had begun to tank his marital bliss with debt and infidelity. His older brother Jon was close to their father, having known him in a time before the gambling and alcoholism became a real problem, but Jace never took to Arthur in the same way.

    He resented his father for making his mother cry and for being too drunk or absentee to be a real father to him. Over time, he begun to resent Jon, too. Jace and Jon’s relationship suffered when Jon made excuses for their father’s behavior one too many times and ultimately, in Jace’s eyes, failed to be a good older brother just as much as their father failed to be a decent dad.

    By the time he was 13, Arthur’s neglect, criminal ties, and mistreatment of her and Jace pushed Mallorie to a breaking point. She left him and Jace chose to go with her. Jon, however, did not. Jon’s choice to stay with their father was divisive but communication and visits with Jon continued until Jace was 16. Communication ceased once Dad’s criminal life caused himself and Jon to run. For Jace, this completely cemented the bad blood between brothers.

    Jace moved back to Sherfield, a small settlement nestled deep in the forests of Ontario,  with his mother. There, he learned to hunt and track, became skilled with a bow, and spent his years picking up the skills that would serve him later as a vigilante.

    He eventually moved to Midnight City, too naive to realize that his dreams of becoming an officer of the law were improbable. He tried until he realized that corruption was at every level and in order to succeed, he’d have to cough up his morality. Unwilling to bend to a broken system like he thinks his father did, Jace instead has decided to do right by his own rules.

    A cook paying his way through medical school before he was bitten by a vampire at the age of 27. Sage Stotto was brought into clan Asherah for his magical potential exhibited in school and observed outside. He spent eight years in the clutches of the clan, embracing vampire culture, before an interaction with a young human woman reawakened his desire to connect with and help humanity. He shunned the clan, returning to Midcity. 

    Nowdays, Sage works as a diner fry cook and continues to pay his way through night classes at a local hospital.

    Will has lived a life on conflict and it shows. He's lean, corded muscle crossed with scars and tattoos, and his face is lined with with the years. His hair and grizzled appearance place him older than his actual age. His left eye seems a little "off" because of outdated cybernetics, same as his right arm.

    William "Wild Bill" Stark was born and raised in the Stateless Lands, taking to the harsh life of the ultimately free the same way his parents did. At seventeen he enlisted in his local "army" - truthfully little more than an organized militia against the dangers of the Stateless Lands. After his time in the army, having acquired a taste for adventure and finding himself proficient in the ways of war, he joined a mercenary outfit.

    It was as a soldier of fortune that he first saw the seemingly endless expanse of the Eastern Sprawl, the might and prosperity of the Free city states, the brutal horror of the Western Sprawl, and even parts beyond. But as good a soldier, as great a fighter as he was, he did not have the heart of a mercenary. His moral compass led him away, and while he kept in touch - and sometimes employed - with his old brothers in arms, he eventually settled into the life of a sheriff in the Stateless Lands.

    Settling down and having a family is not an ending that a man of violence can often chose, and such was the case for Will Stark. Men he considered his friends, former brothers in arms - men he trusted - came for him over matters he won't speak about. They left him half buried in a shallow grave, his family dead, his home burned to the ground.

    They should have finished burying him.

    Isaac is 5'11" and 180 lbs with dark brown hair grown down to chin level. He keeps his facial hair trimmed and is equipped with beautiful naturally bright amber/green eyes. He maintains an athletic build and is remarkably agile. He sports a bullet wound scar on the left side of his abdomen and three long scars on his left forearm. He tends to wear a sleeveless hooded vest with various styles of beige, brown, or black cargo pants with his favorite pair of refurbished converse shoes, all underneath his old dark brown leather duster. Sometimes he can be seen wearing fingerless gloves, but that's usually for sheer badassary. Standing at an average height and weight for a guy his age, Isaac may not look very special, but he holds a devastating power (and a nasty beast) waiting just below the surface.     Born into a wealthy family in Halcyon City, Isaac had a comfortable childhood, due mostly to his father, Leonidas Glaive's, claim of direct relation to a king of ancient Greece by the same name. His family's position and wealth allowed him to study bluestone at a young age and jump started his obsession with the magical arts. He became very comfortable with his privileged life.

    It didn't last.

    At the age of 11 his family's reputation and stability suffered a devastating blow when his mother, Lydia, transformed into a massive werecat while accompanying Leonidas on a business trip, shocking her husband and the several figure heads from the Fir Domnann Gang that had accompanied them on their trip. It quickly became apparent that she was not in control of her own actions when she lunged at, and slaughtered, the Domnann secretary mid drink. It was a bloodbath. Lydia managed to slaughter six others, including three Domnann bosses, before the local authorities could subdue and restrain her.

    Leonidas was stunned. He had no idea that his own wife was a werecat. With his wife in prison for murder, the Domnann now blaming him for the murders, and the reality that his marrige had been shrouded in secret, Leonidas suffered a breakdown that saw him developing alcoholism. Three years later Isaac displayed his inheritance of the werecat genetics; experiencing his first transformation into a weretiger. Leonidas couldn't take anymore. Isaac was kicked out of his home, and from there he wandered west, scavenging and working to survive. Six years later he found himself living alone in the Stateless Lands where he practiced what magics he knew and trained his beast transformation. Having worked as a bodyguard, hired gun, and farm hand, he grew weary of the way people treated he, and his kind. He decided to head further west, not really knowing what he was looking for.

    Son of a Fushang freedom fighter executed by Shenzhou government forces. Reno never met his father; he was born in Midnight City two months after his execution. Reno was raised by a single mother who never remarried and filled Reno's head with tales about fighting The Man. Midnight City shapes people in its own ways, though. Reno grew into a cynical mercenary and eventually got a job for a Nova Rossiyan firm that led to him fighting in the Mage Wars. What he did there for a dollar wasn't worth it, but it's stuck with him anyway. He never used to think he was a bad guy, just a guy trying to survive. But after that...

    He worked in Europe for a while after the wars until a job went sideways. Reno tried to make his escape with half his guts hanging out. That's the last thing he remembers before he woke up and found himself changed.

    Life as a Second Strain vampire, he supposes, is a mild punishment for everything he did in the Wars.

    Jaxon looks to be a brute of a man. While not the tallest of his kind, he still towers over the other species with ease. Standing at 8'2 and considered the runt of his family, he does his best to always stand straight and avoid slouching in any manner. This helps to add to him looking intimidating unless he is actively trying to relax. However, even then ... he has been told that he has the perfect angry scowl down good. As a gladiator and general muscle at times, he is never without a weapon and doesn't hide that fact. Lacking the full set of armor he had while employed as a full time Gladiator, Jaxon wears what he can put together as he knows it isn't his gear which is his most useful thing in intimidating people.     Jaxon was born in the Stateless lands and raised in a mostly lawless setting. Being a giant made his youth easier than it was for some there, but that didn't mean it wasn't without its difficulties. Finding ways for his family to earn money usually meant fighting as a gladiator or working as hired muscle for someone. So it came as no surprise that he started to learn under his father once he was thirteen. Learning to fight and be tough came before other schooling, but he did learn enough when it came to reading and writing to not be completely illiterate. His true education came in the various fighting pits and arenas as well as the streets where he learned to use his size to his advantage. Yet, it was the arenas and pits that he enjoyed most as he welcomed the roar of the crowds.

     

    Spilling blood and fighting wasn't his only focus though, at least not after he met another gladiator that helped him to understand there was more to the world than sheer savagery. Taught to play to the crowd and put on a good show, Jaxon found himself rather popular in his small part of the Stateless lands. That wasn't to last though as him refusing to throw a fight didn't sit well with those that ran the arena. Put into a fight he couldn't win, Jaxon just barely escaped it with his life. He understood that he needed to find some place else to be and said good-bye to his family to set out on his own. Over the past few years, he has gone from place to place taking jobs as needed to keep money in his pocket. However, even as he is used to traveling ... he is still looking for a place to call home permanently.

haha, I was going to ask you how I could tweak the css for the blockquotes, but it looks perfect now. also I haven't finished the udemy course yet, still kind of getting through all the stuff I already know since it starts from the ground up, but it's really well structured so far. btw, let me know when it's time to set up the real hosting and buy the domain and all that. i do have a free year of hosting that came with a web dev course on udemy, but i think it'll be a little pricier (to renew) than bluehost and also doesn't come with a domain.

Oh, by the way, there is another admin theme installed for Processwire if you want to check it out. When you're in there, click your name in the top-right corner, go to Profile, and then switch to Reno. If you don't like it you can always switch back, but I much prefer it :)

Thank you--I like the work you've been doing too! I went ahead and added a profile switcher in the sidebar as well. I could see scenarios where it would be annoying to navigate to an entirely separate page to switch accounts and then try to find your way back to where you were. This should switch you right there on whatever page you're viewing.

One more thing that just occurred to me to mention: I know I'm spending a lot of time on the interface/player front, but I promise I haven't forgotten about the game itself. I am working on character generation, level-up functionality, shops, etc. as well...am just trying to get a solid foundation here to build on as we progress.

Went ahead and uploaded some new stuff--mostly account page-related. You should be able to select your active profile directly from there now. Edit functionality is still in the works but should be coming soon. Also, if you're seeing the Admin Dashboard link in the nav next to Processwire, the Site Setting portion should actually allow you to change the site title and the homepage text for now.

Haven't pushed a whole lot more live yet, but there are a few new UI-related things ready for review. Might require a hard refresh or cache clearing. Mostly just in relation to heading and form label fonts, subtle navigation menu changes, and sidebar updates. The sidebar shows one idea of how to show that a character has earned enough XP to level up and is ready to upgrade stats.

Yeah, I'm liking it too. Good suggestion! I've done some more work locally but haven't uploaded it yet. Working back and forth between an admin editor so that you can create/edit pages and a more robust character generator with stats included. Hopefully have more for you to see this weekend.

For the logo size, not sure off the top of my head what would work best, but I'd go large initially if you decide to go ahead and start working on something. Much easier to scale down than up. To work in the menu for this layout, probably something with a greater width than height would work best.

Also just discovered that there was a problem with sub-profile creation related to avatars. You should now be able to create new characters from the account page with or without a profile picture.

Think the navigation is looking a little better now. A nice logo to replace the "Vancity" text would probably bring the whole thing together. Wondering about that blue in the sidebar now too, though...not sure it's needed with a cityscape background in the header.

It's all extremely rough, the stuff in the sidebar is static and non-functional (just as a placeholder) for now, but I think we're building on a solid foundation here. And hopefully having a live example that we can play with will let us collaborate more quickly and efficiently. See something wrong or have an idea? Shout it!
